Broncos top Bengals 24-22 for Fox's 1st Denver win

DENVER (AP) - The Denver Broncos' injury epidemic has gotten so bad that Tim Tebow is running routes.

The Broncos lost two more key players Sunday but held on to beat the Cincinnati Bengals 24-22 for coach John Fox's first win in Denver.

The Broncos (1-1) came into the game with five starters sidelined, including Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Lloyd, plus two more expected starters who were hurt in the offseason and are still on the mend.

One of them, nose tackle Ty Warren, was placed on injured reserve Saturday so the Broncos could beef up their battered backfield.

By the second quarter, they'd also lost rookie tight end Julius Thomas (high ankle sprain) and wide receiver Eddie Royal (pulled groin), forcing them to line up Tebow, the at-once popular and polarizing backup quarterback, as a slot receiver on several snaps.

That might have quieted at least for a moment his rabid fan base that's been cheering for Kyle Orton's ouster.

``We have that next-man-up mentality and everybody's here for a reason,'' wide receiver Eric Decker said. ``Everybody can play. And it's what you make of your opportunities.''

Next man up? How about last man standing?

Orton threw two touchdown passes to Decker, who atoned for a big fumble with nine receptions for 113 yards in his first career start, and Willis McGahee ran for 101 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries in his heaviest workload in three seasons.

The Bengals (1-1) were stopped twice in the final minutes by a defense that was missing perennial Pro Bowler Champ Bailey, top tackler D.J. Williams and 2009 NFL sacks king Elvis Dumervil.

``It's one of those things where everybody has to rally,'' Broncos general manager Brian Xanders said. ``The coaches adjusted quickly and did a great job on offense, managed through that. We had a quarterback play receiver. We're down to two tight ends, so Russ Hochstein had to play tight end. Eric Decker stepped up and had two TDs, Kyle played good.

``The defense really shut them down on third down, unbelievable. And in the last three minutes, we stopped them twice. That was huge.''

Tebow appreciated the opportunity to get onto the field even though he lined up wide and not under center.

``I'm going to do whatever I can to help the team,'' he said.

Orton said he wouldn't hesitate to throw it to Tebow, ``but we were never in one of those situations.''

``I will say this: He's a very competitive guy; a very mentally tough guy,'' Fox said. ``He's got excellent football character, so he can probably line up a lot of different places.''

Bengals rookie Andy Dalton bounced back from a bruised right wrist in the opener to throw for 332 yards. He hit fellow rookie A.J. Green 10 times for 124 yards and Jerome Simpson four times for 136 yards.

After scoring on four straight possessions, the Bengals stalled at midfield twice in the closing minutes.

Rather than try a 53-yard field goal, the Bengals went for it on fourth-and-1 at the Denver 36 even though they were 1-for-11 on third-down conversions. Green sneaked into the right flat, but Robert Ayers sniffed out the naked bootleg and drove Dalton into the ground as his pass fell incomplete.

``It was the best decision I could make at that point'' was all Bengals coach Marvin Lewis had to say about not sending out kicker Mike Nugent, who was good from 45, 37 and 23 yards in Denver's thin air where Sebastian Janikowski tied the NFL record last week with a 63-yarder.

Cincinnati got the ball back at its 5 with 2:25 left and no timeouts remaining.

The Bengals reached midfield at the minute mark, but nickel back Jonathan Wilhite sacked Dalton. Then another backup, Wesley Woodyard, made a diving deflection of a pass to tight end Jermaine Gresham.

That brought up fourth-and-19 from the Bengals 43, and Dalton's desperation pass went out of bounds with 23 seconds left.

``That was a character builder for us,'' Brian Dawkins said.

Notes: McGahee's 28 carries were the most by a Broncos RB since Ruben Droughns had 28 against Oakland on Nov. 28, 2004. ... The Bengals lost WR Jordan Shipley to a left knee injury. ... Denver P Britton Colquitt had a career-best 51-yard net average despite having an 82-yarder called back by penalty.

Work left to do: Villanova, Syracuse, DePaul, West Virginia, Providence

Notre Dame and Louisville appear to have done enough to make the move, so we'll make them locks. The Cardinals, despite a modest RPI, are trending way up and have clinched at least a tie for third in the Big East, which should be more than enough with their pair of big road wins. Villanova got back to .500 and gets back to more solid footing. Syracuse got a very important road win and crippled a fellow contender in the process. West Virginia's fate could be in its hands Tuesday at Pitt.

Work left to do:

Villanova [18-9 (7-7), RPI: 21, SOS: 5] Pounded Rutgers to get back to .500. If Cats can get their last two (at UConn, vs. Syracuse), that should be enough with strong computer numbers and a host of wins away from The Pavilion. The Cats have beaten Texas and swept the Big 5 (never easy in Philly), but have a couple of losses to bubble teams (Xavier, Drexel), too. I still think they'll be OK, possibly even at 8-8.

Syracuse [20-8 (9-5), RPI: 53, SOS: 62] History says 10 wins will be plenty, but it might be hard for the Orange to get that last one with a final two vs. G'town, which is trying to win the league title, and at Villanova, which will be desperate for a W. The relative lack of nonconference heft and the weak computer numbers are still concerns, but the Orange have won four in a row and got a very, very big win at Providence on Saturday.

DePaul [16-12 (8-7), RPI: 54, SOS: 18] Beat Cincy and should get past South Florida to get to 9-7, but then what? They have beaten Kansas and Cal (right after the DeVon Hardin injury) earlier this season, but also have lost to Bradley and Purdue, among others. They'll likely need a couple of BE tourney wins, too, but we'll see ...

West Virginia [19-7 (8-6), RPI: 58, SOS: 125] The game at Pitt on Tuesday night could decide the Mountaineers' fate (barring a deep tournament run). They can still get to 9-7 in the Big East without it by beating Cincinnati, but the nine wins would be against UConn, Villanova, St. John's, South Florida, DePaul, Rutgers, Seton Hall twice and the Bearcats. Beating bubble foes is fine, but where's the beef? Outside of beating PG-less UCLA in nonconference play (still a top quality win), there's not a lot to fall back on (besides maybe NC State). WVU vs. Syracuse would be an interesting debate, as the teams don't play in the Big East regular season. WVU has the best win, but Cuse has played the much better schedule.

Providence [17-10 (7-7), RPI: 70, SOS: 33] The Friars likely saw their at-large hopes die at home in the four-point loss to Syracuse, barring an unexpected run to the Big East semis or more. The RPI, bad already, won't be helped by playing St. John's and South Florida in the final two league games.
