09/14/2007 - Atlanta, GA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - South African Tim Clark fired an eight-under- par 62 Thursday and leads the suspended Tour Championship, the fourth and final FedEx Cup playoff event.
Clark's 62 tied the course record that Bart Bryant set in 2005.
Players had to withstand a three-hour, three-minute weather delay during the first round, which was eventually suspended for the night due to darkness.
More bad weather is in the forecast for Friday at East Lake Golf Club. First- round play is scheduled to resume Friday at 8:00 a.m. (et), while the second round will start at 9:00 a.m. Players will remain in the same twosomes for round two.
Padraig Harrington is one stroke behind Clark at minus-seven. John Rollins played the back nine in six-under par and that was his total, six-under-par 64. Mark Calcavecchia is also minus-six through 16 holes.
Tiger Woods birdied his first three holes and was four-under par through 11 holes when play was halted for the night.
Woods knocked his second shot to nine feet at the first and shortly thereafter play was suspended due to inclement weather.
When it resumed, Woods drained his birdie putt. He followed with an 18-foot birdie putt at two and a 33-footer for birdie on the third to go three-under.
Woods came up short on the fifth and could not save par from there. He rebounded with a birdie on the sixth as he nearly holed his tee shot, leaving himself just one foot.
Woods got up and down for birdie on the ninth to get to four-under. He parred his last two holes to stand at minus-four, tied for seventh.
"I hit it pretty good and somehow knocked those putts in," said Woods, who is No. 1 on the playoff points list. "Putts don't break out here now. For so long, you had to take the higher line on putts, but this week as slow as the greens are and as bumpy as they are, you have to take the low line and beat it."
Phil Mickelson, who stands third in the FedEx Cup standings, is one-under through 12. Rory Sabbatini and K.J. Choi, who are fourth and fifth in the standings, are also minus-one.
Mickelson was three-over through five, but birdied three in a row from the seventh, then birdied No. 12 to get into red figures.
Steve Stricker, who is second in the FedEx standings, is for tied 26th at plus-one through 11 holes.
A lot of the talk coming into the event was about the greens. Atlanta had a long heat wave this summer and nearly lost some of them. But they were better than expected Thursday.
"We were fortunate being one of the first groups out there. We felt they were pretty good. There were no foot prints yet," stated Clark. "For us at least, I was looking at putts thinking I could make them."
Clark got off to a flying start as he drained a 20-foot birdie effort on the second. He came right back with another birdie on the third from 12 feet out and made it three in a row with a birdie on four.
The South African cooled as he parred five straight, but remained in a tie atop the leaderboard with Camilo Villegas.
Clark picked up his fourth birdie at the 10th and Villegas matched that birdie to remain tied for the lead. Clark's approach at the par-four 12th stopped four inches from the hole.
He kicked that in for birdie to move into the out-right lead at minus-five. Clark knocked his approach inside a foot again, this time at the 14th. After tapping in for birdie, Clark found the short grass of the tee at the 15th.
Clark pulled his second shot left of the green and didn't look to be in position for an eagle. However, he chipped in to jump to minus-eight.
"Even I'll admit that was a little bit lucky," Clark joked.
Clark got up and down for par on 16, then two-putted for par on the final two greens to lead by one.
"Obviously I'm very pleased with that. I've been playing nicely pretty much the last two months," said Clark, who needed just 24 putts in round one. "With the greens being soft, the course is playing pretty long for me. I'm using a lot of hybrids into the greens."
Harrington was one-under after nine, then birdied the 10th and 11th. After three pars, the reigning British Open champ birdied the final four holes to end one behind Clark.
"Four birdies to finish is always going to be a good day," Harrington said. "It was a strange round where I was one-under par on the front nine and obviously felt I should have been better. Then on the back nine, I played some really exciting golf."
Hunter Mahan and Woody Austin are both minus-five through 17 holes and are tied for fifth. Woods was joined in seventh by defending champion Adam Scott, who has played 13 holes.

Super Bowl XLIII isn't even a week old yet and oddsmakers have already released Super Bowl XLIV odds.
Despite the Pittsburgh Steelers winning Super Bowl 43, the New England Patriots are 8/1 favorites to win Super Bowl 44.
Bet Super Bowl XLIV Future Odds
With their 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII, the Steelers became the latest NFL champion. But believe it or not, oddsmakers from online sports book MySportsbook.com don't have the Steelers the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIV next season.
That honor belongs to the New England Patriots, who are 8/1 favorites to win despite not even qualify for the postseason in 2008. The Pats also have a major decision to make regarding what to do with Matt Cassel, who played well in Tom Brady's (knee surgery) absence last year but is also a free agent this offseason.
Ironically, the Steelers aren't even oddsmakers second choice to win Super Bowl 44, as the Dallas Cowboys are listed right behind the Patriots at 9/1 despite not making the playoffs themselves. Clearly oddsmakers think the public will hop back on the Cowboys' bandwagon considering the immense talent they have and the opening of a brand new stadium.
After Dallas, then comes Pittsburgh at 10/1, but they share those odds with the New York Giants, who won Super Bowl XLII. The Indianapolis Colts and San Diego Chargers round out the top six teams at 12/1, while the Baltimore Ravens (14/1), Tennessee Titans (16/1), Carolina Panthers (18/1) and Philadelphia Eagles (18/1) complete the top 10.
The NFC Champion Arizona Cardinals got no love from oddsmakers as they were established as a 30/1 long shot to win next year's Super Bowl. They share those same odds with the Chicago Bears and Tampa Bay Buccaneers – two teams that didn't even qualify for the postseason. Other long shots are the Kansas City Chiefs (100/1), Detroit Lions (100/1), St. Louis Rams (75/1) and Oakland Raiders (75/1).
